Introduction Virology practical works

Practical works focus on lab techniques used in Virology. The only live virus manipulated during these practical works is the bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV1), which is not zoonotic.

Nevertheless, the respect of biosafety rules is essential because the BSL2 also hosts activities involving the handling of zoonotic foodborne pathogens. Rules are reminded during the initial session.

On the other hand, viral cytopathogenic effects are also observed: these effects are obtained by using viruses further inactivated through cell fixation processes. These viruses are thus not infectious anymore.

Part of practical works consists in manipulating in a biosafety cabinet: it is then required to wear a single-use apron and disposable gloves. Such manipulation is organised in the form of group rotations (3-4 persons per group).
