Biosecurity in Necropsy SOP

Introduction

Respect for the ’onward march’

Necropsies are performed on cadavers from clinics or referred by private vet practitioners. Respect the onward march (clean areas to dirty areas) is crucial.

Necropsied animals are likely to carry infectious diseases which are potentially contagious. It is important therefore to reduce the risk of disseminating infectious agents from the necropsy room, notably through people working in this high-risk area.

Moreover, these animals may also carry zoonotic pathogens and thus represent a risk to human health.

Three categories of actors are susceptible of attending the necropsy room:

  1. Occasional visits, consisting in a participation to the necropsy of an animal, concern GMV1 students
  2. GMV2 and GMV3 students are directly involved in the necropsy of animals, within the framework of their mornings provided in the necropsy room (clinical rotation).
  3. Clinicians might have to observe the results of a necropsy, but they cannot enter the dissection area.
